Rhinomanometry is a clinical diagnostic technique that records variations in airflow and pressure that occur inside the nasal cavities during the different phases of respiration, allowing an objective and quantitative assessment of their degree of patency.

Depending on the equipment used and its operating mechanism, there are several types of rhinomanometry. The most commonly used in clinical practice, and the one available in our clinic, is computerized active anterior rhinomanometry.

 

What does Rhinomanometry consist of?

It is a non-invasive and easy-to-perform test, whose main contributions or advantages are:

    • It allows adequate assessment of the relationship between nasal anatomical deformities, such as septal deviations, and their functional impact, avoiding overestimation or underestimation.
    • It makes it possible to differentiate nasal from non-nasal causes in cases of respiratory insufficiency.
    • It eliminates patient subjectivity when making the diagnosis.
    • It facilitates the evaluation of the functional efficiency of medical or surgical treatments.
    • It allows the study of the influence of certain factors (vasoconstrictors, allergens, etc.) on nasal respiratory function by determining it before and after provocation tests.
